"Querer fazer o bem é uma coisa e fazê-lo realmente é outra. Sim, infelizmente, o desejo de fazer o bem é insuficiente: nós devemos também ser muito lúcidos e honestos para admitir que, crendo que estamos a agir bem, podemos cometer erros. Por isso, devemos estar ainda mais desconfiados em relação a nós mesmos do que em relação aos outros. 

E também pode acontecer que, agindo bem, se atraia o ódio, as inimizades. Ouve-se muitas vezes as pessoas dizer: «Fazei o bem e colhereis o mal», e é verdade. Mas isso não deve justificar o egoísmo e a recusa de ajudar os outros. Então, qual é a atitude do sábio? Ele faz o bem com conhecimento de causa e, se colher mal de volta, não ficará surpreendido nem triste, pois sabia à partida aquilo a que se expunha. Portanto, aquele que quer fazer o bem deve primeiro estudar honestamente as suas intenções e os meios que utiliza. Depois, deve saber que, mesmo que faça realmente o bem, pode receber o mal como retorno."

Hace el bien con conocimiento de la causa, y si es el mal lo que recibe a cambio, no le sorprende ni le aflige porque ya sabía de antemano a lo que se exponía. Así pues, aquél que desee hacer el bien es quién debe primero estudiar honestamente sus móviles y los medios que emplea. Y después debe saber que, incluso si hace realmente el bien, puede recibir a cambio el mal. "

So, those who want to do good must first of all be honest and study their motives and the means they employ. And then they should know that however much good they do, they may receive evil in return."
